The Streamkeepers Central Database is the next logical step in the Streamkeepers Program. Data gathered using the Streamkeepers methodology can be uploaded, queries can be run, and reports generated, all via the Internet. The database works hand in hand with the Streamkeepers Handbook and Modules, and in particular, the data collection sheets included in modules 1, 2, 3, 4, 11 and 12.
About the Streamkeepers Database
The Streamkeepers Program was introduced by Fisheries and Oceans Canada in 1993, in an effort to support community volunteers who are interested in assessing, monitoring and improving their local waterways.
The Streamkeepers Federation was launched in 1995 to support those same efforts, as well as distribute the Streamkeepers Handbook and Modules, and to provide training, assistance to trainers and the Streamkeepers VIP insurance plan.
At Workshop 1999, Fisheries and Oceans Canada launched the Streamkeepers Data Entry Tool, as a method to store the data collected using the Streamkeepers Program. As time went on and technology advanced, Fisheries and Oceans decided to discontinue the database in 2012.
With a $5,000.00 grant from the Pacific Salmon Foundation, the Streamkeepers federation designed and implemented this new database, and launched it at Workshop 2013, held on on Bowen Island.
What can you do with the database?
At the time of this writing, once you have registered, you can gain access to the data entry section through your profile page. Once the data is entered, you can view it from the reports page. As time goes on, more customized queries will be available.
One feature that is not available any other way, is the ability to view the number of volunteer hours your group has performed. The aggregate is also shown on the home page.
